Survival

THIS BOOK WILL SAVE YOUR LIFE

My twenty-four year old son and I have been talking a lot lately about the concept of survival and preparedness. Thomas was a boyscout when he was young and for a brief time I volunteered as an assistant scoutmaster with his scout troop in San Diego, California.

Our troop’s emphasis was on high-adventure backpacking in the mountains and deserts of San Diego and Imperial Counties, in addition to an annual trip to Havasupai Falls in the Grand Canyon.

During our time in scouting we learned a great deal about how to take care of ourselves in extreme, outdoor conditions—it’s all about the gear, the right “can-do” attitude, and the skill-set to do the work necessary; not only to survive in the wilderness but more, to actually enjoy it! :)

Havasu Falls

That’s what scouting & surviving are all about and I am here to tell you that you don’t have to be afraid! You just have to Be Prepared. If prissy-missy-princess me can learn to LOVE Backpacking then so can you. Anyone with a sound body, coupled with good old-fashion determination, can learn the skills needed to survive off the land; it’s in our genetic make-up. Tribes of peoples throughout history have lived and loved their lives while fighting the elements to survive. Let them be your examples. Combined with modern day advice from experts and we who call ourselves: SURVIVORS!

Allzeit bereit! Always prepared!

Remember the scout motto:

The Scout Motto is: BE PREPARED which means you are always in a state of readiness in mind and body to do your DUTY.

  • Be Prepared in Mind by having disciplined yourself to be obedient to every order, and also by having thought out beforehand any accident or situation that might occur, so that you know the right thing to do at the right moment, and are willing to do it.
  • Be Prepared in Body by making yourself strong and active and able to do the right thing at the right moment, and do it.

The video clip here below is an interview with Neil Strauss, the author of the book I am holding in the photo above–EMERGENCY This Book Will Save Your Life. Thomas got me started on Neil’s addictive and witty writing style about three years ago. He owns Neil’s best seller The Game, and back when I first got here to Florida, he was busy mastering the art of pick up. If you don’t know what it means to be a pick-up artist then while your buying yourself a copy of EMERGENCY, get Neil’s book The Game as well. :)
